media@greenlining.org danielle.bell@greenlining.orgOn this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor the legacy of a leader whose courage and vision transformed our fight for racial, economic, and environmental justice. This year, MLK Day coincides with the inauguration of an administration that threatens to undermine decades of progress.
This country was built on systems designed to: extract, exploit, and extort. The unfortunate truth is that Trump’s reelection last November highlights how the deep fractures still present in our country have created fertile ground for regressive and dangerous policies.
Yet, the lasting impact of civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. proved that progress is possible when we all work together to change those systems.
BIPOC communities and our allies have faced a far right racist agenda before, and won. We know that the way forward isn’t through the failed, exclusionary policies of the past. The only path forward is equity for all.
Our collective vision for equity in America is bold. Each and everyday, we work to transform our society into one where our children are healthy and thriving, where everyone, regardless of race, can access opportunities, and where our communities are safe and resilient.
Despite the challenges ahead, we remain hopeful. Hopeful because of those who continue to fight for justice, who refuse to accept inequity, and who work every day to build a better future. Hopeful because The Greenlining Institute has spent 30 years developing equity-centered strategies and tactics, building partnerships, and shoring up the resilience of our movements so we can weather difficult moments like this one.
Together, we will create the world Dr. King envisioned—where everyone, regardless of race or income, can thrive.
