Equity Lab 2019: Development Without Displacement
Equity Lab 2019 is the story of our neighborhoods — areas on the frontline of climate change and communities of color. From massive disinvestment and racial exclusion, to investment, gentrification and displacement — these societal phenomena are far from new. Yet, we believe there’s are ways to overcome these unjust systems. During the Equity Lab session on Development without Displacement at The Greenlining Institute’s 29th annual summit; our team of equity experts developed an interactive activity to walk participants through creating an anti-displacement plan.
Introduction to Equity Lab:
Imagine that after years of underinvestment, your neighborhood is starting to see new development – new jobs, housing, transit, parks, and other facilities. However, many residents and businesses are concerned that the improvements will also lead to rent increases that price them out. As an advocate, you get to be part of the group that is making sure that development happens equitably. Your job is to make sure residents, small businesses, and cultural institutions can stay, even if the rents go up.
Creating an anti-displacement plan:
A series of policy options has been prepared. We haven’t pre-determined which policies might have the most impact—that’s up to you decide in your groups. And you might not all be experts, but you live in this neighborhood and are part of determining what your community should look like.
This activity is meant to simulate the process of working with neighbors and community activists. It will guide racial equity advocates through the process of building a collective vision for how to prevent the displacement of residents, small businesses and cultural institutions on frontline communities.
