Casa Multi-Ethnic Residential Program

Overview

Founded in 1970 by Chicano/Latino students, Casa is a multi-ethnic residential program for students attending UC Berkeley. Since Greenlining assumed ownership of Casa in 2004, we have renovated it and re-created it as a multi-ethnic theme cooperative committed to fostering academic success and cross-racial understanding.

Programming

Today, the Greenlining Academy has provided “Casistas” (as house residents are known) with, among other things, community building activities, career exploration and preparation workshops, discussion forums on critical issues, work study opportunities and academic support in the form of on-site tutors to its residents. Some additional program highlights include an annual snow trip, faculty dinners, movie nights and the multiethnic BBQ.

House

Casa was built in 1914 by renowned architect and UC Berkeley alumna, Julia Morgan. The original hardwood floors, paneling and cabinets of the house remain intact. There is quick and easy access to campus, public transportation, restaurants and shops. Each room is fully furnished with a bed, desk and dresser. The house has common areas like the “Sala” where students come together for house events or just to hang out.

Casa also has a computer center with high-speed and wireless internet access.
