Toward Fair Cures: Diversity in Stem Cell Research

In 2004, Californians passed Proposition 71 with an overwhelming support from the state's minority communities. Called the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act, it would invest $3 BILLION into stem cell research and development with the promise of cures and an estimated 22,000 jobs for the biotechnology industry. Nearly 4 years later and with a $15 billion budget deficit, questions remain about how California will incorporate its diverse communities into their $3 billion economic development program.

This video is an outreach piece produced by the Greenlining Institute to inform voters of issues of diversity in stem cell research. Two other pieces were produced that provide more in-depth information about diversity issues and economic implications of stem cell research.

IPO High School Summer Camp

The Greenlining IPO High School Summer Camp is a 10-day program for mature and motivated high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors with an interest in social entrepreneurship and advocacy. The Camp builds on the success of the Investing Pays-Off (IPO) program developed by Merrill Lynch and is a product of the Merrill Lynch - Greenlining Institute California Partnership for Economic Achievement. As part of the IPO curriculum, students learn about important issues facing California and develop a non-profit that addresses these issues through innovative public, private and non-profit partnerships. The Camp attracts students from across the state and offers the opportunity to develop cross-cultural relationships while experiencing college life first-hand. Camp participants are housed at Casa, a student housing facility owned and operated by the Greenlining Institute and located directly across from the University of California at Berkeley campus.

Fresno Rabobank Protest
"No somos colonia extranjera! We are not a Dutch colony."

February 26, 2007
On February 26, 2007, 70 Latino and Southeast Asian small farm owners, farm workers and community leaders organized a protest in Fresno, California against Rabobank, a giant Dutch bank that is among the 25 largest banks in the world. The theme of the protest was: "We are not a Dutch colony!"

Our objective was to insist that Rabobank meet its handshake agreement of December 2005 to help small organic farmers and to enable farmworkers to become farmowners. Due to the lack of Dutch leadership interest, the protest will continue.

Leadership in Philanthropy
Investing in Minority Communities

Fall 2006
A groundbreaking new study released by the Greenlining Institute points to a troubling trend in foundation grant making: only 3.6% of grant dollars from the nation's top 24 private foundations went to minority-led organizations.

The study, titled Investing in a Diverse Democracy: Foundation Giving to Minority-Led Nonprofits, analyzes grant making of the nation's largest private foundations and California's largest private and community foundations. It finds a tremendous disparity in giving among these foundations. Community and foundation leaders discuss the implications of the study’s findings.
