The Spotlight
September 17, 2007
On the KPFA Morning Show , Health Fellow Angela Echiverri discussed the need for increasing diversity and cultural competency in the UC medical schools. She was joined by Dr. Kevin Barnett, Senior Investigator at the Public Health Institute and Jeff Oxendine, Associate Dean for Public Health Practice and Executive Director of the Center for Public Health Practice at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. Racial and ethnic minority groups comprise the majority of the state's population; however they are under-represented within the staff, faculty, and student body of the UC medical school system. Angela highlighted findings in Greenlining's UC Medical Schools Diversity Reports and made recommendations to improve minority recruitment and retention. A diverse health workforce will help decrease ethnic health disparities by assuring cultural competency and quality care. To hear more on increasing diversity in the UC Medical Schools, listen to Angela's interview at: http://www.kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=22308 .

Bridges to Health Team Missions
Diversity in the Health Workforce
Bridges to Health is working to promote more diversity in the health industry through a host of efforts, including examining diversity statistics and policies in health-related higher education. We seek to bring minorities to the table in health policy decision making.
Access to Care | |
The Bridges to Health team seeks to strengthen California’s healthcare system so that all Californians can benefit. We work towards intelligent investments in culturally and linguistically appropriate preventive and primary health care that can not only save lives, but will also save money for patients, taxpayers and the healthcare system as a whole.
Diversity in Stem Cell Research
>> Click here to learn more about Diversity in Stem Cell Research... | With a $3 billion dollar investment into healthcare andfacebook employment opportunities, the underserved and minority communities of California must ensure that their stem cell program serves the state's diverse population. Learn more on how Greenlining is working to insure diversity in this investment and to learn more about the Toward Fair Cures conference. |
Prescription Drugs | |
All Californians are paying the price! Our Bridges to Health Team is continuing to work, on both the federal and state levels, for the right of all Californians to have access to safe, effective, and affordable prescription drugs that are purchased in a fair marketplace.
