The Bridges to Health team seeks to promote policies that will strengthen California’s underserved communities by promoting access to care FOR ALL. A system that prioritizes quality health care for everyone leads to vibrant communities. Our program works to provide a voice for and engage low-income communities of color, who are disproportionately affected by inadequate health coverage, to participate in the process of advocating for a better health care system.

Greenlining seeks to promote policies that will strengthen California’s healthcare system so that all Californians will benefit, including policies that:

  • Provide universal and affordable health care coverage for all Californians
  • Ensure equity of responsibility based on financial resources
  • Assure an efficient health care system to sustain universal coverage
  • Assure equitable, high quality health care for all, that includes cultural and linguistic competency
  • Prioritize prevention by encouraging preventive care and creating healthy communities

Health Reform

A health care crisis is currently impacting the well-being and economic vitality of California.  Nearly 7 million Californians are uninsured.  This crisis is particularly pertinent to communities of color, who are more likely to be uninsured; approximately 75% of uninsured Californians include people of color.

About 75% of the uninsured represent communities of color.

Every 10 years, a critical window of opportunity emerges in health care reform. This year, the Governor and various state legislators have demonstrated the political will and have advanced proposals to reform the health care system. The Greenlining Institute, by way of the Bridges to Health program and in collaboration with various coalitions, has been active to ensure that health care reform is responsive to the needs of communities of color.

Over one-third of the uninsured include families with an annual household income of less than $25,000.  The Federal Poverty Level for a family of four is $20,650 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2007)
