SAN FRANCISCO – Greenlining Institute Claiming Our Democracy Director Michelle Romero will testify alongside other advocates, experts and voting officials tomorrow at the National Commission on Voting Rights hearing at UC Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. Romero will address the needs of limited-English voters and measures that can be taken to make elections more accessible to these citizens.
The Commission, organized by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, is convening a series of hearings across the nation to collect testimony on the current landscape of voting and elections in the U.S. in the wake of restrictive state voting laws and last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision invalidating a key provision of the Voting Rights Act.
WHAT: National Commission on Voting Rights, California Statewide Hearing
Panels – There will be formal panels of witnesses representing voting rights organizations, community leaders, election officials, and other stakeholders. Witnesses are encouraged to submit written testimony in advance of the hearing. The panel of commissioners will also receive the testimony orally and may ask follow up questions.
Public Testimony – There will be opportunities throughout the event for California voters to testify about their experiences.
