New Report: Community Benefit and Missed Opportunities

Download: Community Benefit and Missed Opportunities

Last month, our Health Equity team released their latest publication, “Community Benefit and Missed Opportunities: A Case Study of Three San Francisco Hospitals.” As a follow-up to “Non-Profit Hospitals and Community Benefit: What We Don’t Know Can Hurt Us,” this new publication closely examines the issue of community benefit by assessing the programs of three non-profit hospitals in San Francisco, California.

At the core of the issue is the fact that not-for-profit hospitals receive tax breaks in return for “community benefit” services and programs that they are required to provide to local communities. Our findings reveal that these hospitals are receiving twice as much in tax breaks than what they give back to taxpayers as community benefit spending. Furthermore, our analysis of the three hospitals shows a disturbing lack of transparency in public reporting of these activities. Read the full report here.

Greenlining Urges Federal Reserve to Reject CIT/OneWest Merger

Reject the CIT/OneWest Bank Merger

In a letter sent to the Federal Reserve Board last month, the Greenlining Institute urged the Federal Reserve Board to reject the proposed acquisition of Pasadena, California-based OneWest Bank by CIT Group.

Greenlining’s letter cites multiple issues with the deal, including a lack of public benefit from the merger, OneWest’s clear intention to serve the wealthy and poor track record with communities of color, lack of transparency, excessive executive compensation and a problematic loss-share agreement with the FDIC that could leave taxpayers on the hook.

Executive Director Orson Aguilar said it best in the LA Times,“The last thing California needs is a too-big-to-fail bank for the one percent.”
