Not-for-profit hospitals get a tax exemption in return for fulfilling a duty to improve community health — what’s called “community benefit.” Greenlining examined the publicly available records of California’s seven largest not-for-profit hospital systems and found that the data regarding their community benefit activities is too incomplete for the public to have a clear picture of whether they are meeting their responsibilities. Greenlining’s health team makes specific recommendations regarding ways to improve transparency and use community benefit dollars to help communities stay healthy.
