Diversity is the key to meeting the demands of the health sector. By ensuring diversity across all facets of health care — including health workforce diversity, board and executive diversity, and supplier diversity — the health sector can better respond to the needs of underserved communities of color. Greenlining strongly believes that health equity can only be achieved with diversity across all levels of leadership in the health sector.
Greenlining has lead statewide efforts to uplift diversity, particularly in California Department of Insurance proceedings regarding large insurance mergers. Greenlining has urged the state and federal governments to impose stringent diversity standards for these companies. Furthermore, we have pressured these large, multi-billion dollar corporations to commit to diversifying their leadership at the state and national level.
In 2012, Greenlining sponsored and helped pass legislation that required the state’s largest insurers to report the extent of their contracts with businesses owned by minorities, women, and disabled veterans. Since then, we have produced two reports analyzing the impact of this program.
